The city of Huntington Beach, California is always buzzing with excitement. If you have never been to the area, it is known for the great surfing which attracts surfers from all over the world. Around the corner from Main Street on Pacific Coast Highway, where the waves crash gently on the shore sits the Hyatt hotel which houses one of my favorite restaurants, “The Californian.” The Californian is rated as a AAA four diamond restaurant, which is a rating of high honor. This restaurant has

an infusion of many different flavors from local Southern California ingredients. The ingredients are fresh and seasonal and in both of my visits to this property with this decadent dining service, I have had nothing but a top notch experience!

On my second visit to The Californian I was fortunate to have the Travelzoo special deal I had purchased to use on my visit. Travelzoo had a fabulous offering they created with The Californian for our dining experience. The Travelzoo deal offered to us was for $99 instead of the regular $199. The deal was for two people to dine oceanside during a five-course dinner. There was another deal that

recently popped up for the same price with wine pairings…darn…missed that one, but we ordered a fabulous bottle of Napa Valley wine with our meal anyhow.:)

Chef Jose Rodriguez knows how to please his dinner guests with his amazing array of menu item choices. The five course meal we had included for each of us, a salad or soup for each of us, two entrees, and two deserts.
Upon dining at the Californian, we started our meal with agave-roasted butternut squash bisque with spiced pepitas and a salad of watercress and endive with candied hazelnuts, pear, Redwood Hill Farm’s feta, creamy hazelnut dressing. For our second courses we had filet mignon with organic mushroom and rutabaga hash, pumpkin-seed butter, red wine jus and lamb t-bones with herb-

crusted with sweet pea puree, organic vegetables. For desert we had chocolate and Nutella tart with salted caramel and the Meyer lemon cheesecake with locally sourced fruit and cream. We paired our meal with a Sebastiani Cabernet Sauvignon wine and after desert we tried the Strawberry Margarita that the Chef recommended.

The flavors of each dish were quite delectable and memorable. I honestly cannot say there was one item that I did not like! The filet mignon that I ordered I also had the first time I visited the restaurant. I simply had to get it twice because it was the juiciest piece of steak I have ever had! The knife easily sliced the warm and juicy piece of meat like butter. The cut of meat was absolute perfection and the amazing pumpkin seed butter with organic mushrooms made for a nice
pairing with the meat. My favorite desert is anything that is chocolate salted caramel so I must say my taste buds became extremely excited for this yummy desert. The Meyer lemon cheesecake also had a burst of flavors with the fresh cream and blueberries.
Upon finishing our dinner, Chef Jose took us on a tour of the kitchen as well as a tour of the other restaurant, “Pete’s

Sunset Grille.” As he walked us around the gorgeous grounds of the Hyatt, we found it was a warm and welcoming atmosphere. You could hear the sound of the waves hitting the shore adjacent to the property that was easily accessible to walk to from the Hyatt’s private bridge.
The Californian at the Hyatt is definitely among one of my favorite restaurants I have

visited and I cannot wait to go back. The location of the Hyatt is located across the street from one of California’s most beautiful beaches and serves some of the best food. Whether you live in the local area or you are coming to visit from afar, “The Californian” restaurant is a must visit. I will be back there soon. The service is
top notch, as well as the food. Chef Jose has a gift with blending ingredients.:)
