I am proud to say I was one of the first to taste Truett-Hurst’s Exclusive Released California collection of wines last Wednesday, October 9th. They were released the next day, Thursday, October 10th at Total Wine and More. I was unsure of what to expect when I first arrived at the store to sample these wines, but I was definitely quite impressed by the square bottle. I was informed that their slogan is, “Wine that Doesn’t Cut Corners.” I just loved that one. 🙂

Truett-Hurts Inc., based in the Dry Creek and Russian River Valley in Sonoma County, along with winemaker, Ginny Lambrix from VML wines recently released this awesome new wine called California Square. The wine comes in retro, stylish square bottles and it was first introduced at the 65th Annual Emmy Awards at the end of September 2013. Shortly after that as I said above, I had the opportunity to sample it. 🙂

For those that know me, I am definitely a big wine person. I usually like full bodied reds that make your mouth pucker and oaky Chardonnays that have sat in oak barrels and have a buttery flavor on my palate. For the California Square wine tasting, I was given three varietals to sample.

The three wines released by California Square Wines in their awesome packaging with embossing, vintage graphics and gorgeous colors were a Russian River Valley Chardonnay, Paso Robles Cabernet, and a Paso Robles Three Red Blend. All three definitely were able to hold their own without any meal pairing!

The first wine, 2012 Russian River Chardonnay presented a pleasant blend of flavors on my tongue as I swirled it in my mouth. It was definitely a rich and creamy flavor, but definitely not too oaky or too citrusy. It was the perfect blend for me. The winemaker said it resembles a “lemon crème brulee” on the palate and I tend to agree! This was a very smooth wine! It could be paired well with grilled fish or chicken.

The next wine I tried was the 2012 Paso Robles Three Red Blend which actually ended up being my favorite! This wine is a blend from 8 different lots and it is a blend of 5 different varieties. This one was quite jammy in my opinion, almost like a Zinfandel and there were flavors of boysenberry and blackberry jam. This wine could easily be drank alone or with a variety of different meal options. I really think it could go well with anything, including, meats, fish, chicken, or vegetarian.

The last wine I tasted was the 2012 Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon. This one was most bold in flavor and had intense flavors of cherry and licorice yet there was still a smooth finish. This is a complex wine that can be enjoyed with or without food. As a food pairing for this wine I would recommend a hearty steak or lamb. 🙂

California Square Wines not only have a cool bottle, but they are also easy to keep for a long time in that they can simply be placed on a shelf and stored properly without rolling away and they are also eco friendly because less material is used to ship their unique square designs and the bottles can be reused.:) See their website for creative use ideas of these awesome bottles CALIFORNIA SQUARE WINES. At a price point of $19.99, these are well worth their value! These honestly tasted like $50 bottles to me! Head in to your local Total Wine and More and pick up a bottle sometime soon whether it be for a dinner party or a casual evening in. 🙂 Let me know what you think of California Square Wines if you have had them in the comments section below!
