When booking travel it is important to know where to shop online to find the best deals. Upon just returning home from Alaska, I was excited to write this article since I used several sites to book my trip in order to save money. In this trip alone, I used 4 different sites! In this post, I have included a few photos from some of the places I have visited over the years.:)

Travel can get very pricy, but there are definitely a few tips I would like to share as to how to save money when you decide to book a trip. First of all, I think it is much better to book in advance in order to get a variety of better deals on flights, hotels, and cars. I recently learned this when travelling to Alaska because I always book in advance and for the first time ever, I booked my flight, hotels, and rental car only 2 days in advance and I got stuck with some crappy hotels for the same price I would have spent on great hotels near the city and a super expensive flight. (I only went through with my travel plans to Alaska because I had a buy one get one free airline ticket from the Alaska Airlines credit card! Read about the ALASKA AIRLINES CREDIT CARD HERE.

Some travel sites I usually use are below, but don’t forget, it is important to look up the individual hotel rates on their individual websites because sometimes prices are even cheaper when you book directly with a hotel. Airline fees are usually pretty much the same, but it never hurts to look. In my past experiences, from searching around through the different sites below, I have been able to bring hotel room rates down by $30 – $50 per night!
Here are my top travel sites that I have used regularly on my journeys around the planet:

*Kayak – This is a great website and is the first place I always check when booking travel. This site is awesome in that it scours the net for the cheapest prices on airfare, hotels, and rental cars in one shot. Kayak simply retrieves a list of prices from several different websites and shows you comparisons as well as the cheapest sites for hotels, airlines, cars and combined travel packages.

Orbitz – This is currently my favorite site to search because I belong to a free program I signed up with on the Orbitz Website that is called orbucks, in which I am able to accrue points for each purchase I make. These points are then converted to dollars that I can use on future reservations. I am also signed up for the email list for orbitz and I regularly receive promo codes via email that I also use when I make reservations to save even more money! I definitely save the most money using Orbitz even if the travel price is ever slightly higher due to the ability to use orbucks and promo codes.

Travelocity/Expedia – These two companies are now both owned by Expedia, which is why I put them together. Sometimes I cannot find a specific hotel I want on Orbitz or I have no Orbucks to use and so I visit these sites. I used them to book a hotel I could not find on Orbitz this past trip and I was happy with the rate. I also had to cancel a night in a hotel recently that I could not handle staying at after the first night and they kindly refunded me even though the policy said no refunds. I appreciated their understanding greatly!!

Hotwire – This site is great if you do not care which hotel you get. Hotwire scours the net for great prices and only tells you the vicinity of your hotel and the star rating prior to booking. I have used them before when I have went to Las Vegas and I have gotten $300 rooms for only $150-$180 a night, so if you do not feel the need to know which hotel you are staying at, I definitely recommend this site!!

Trip Advisor – This is the site I always visit prior to opening any booking sites. It is such a valuable site just to read about the area in which you want to visit and it tells you hotel locations, as well as activities to do in each location. The reviews by other people are great to read to figure out where to go! Trip Advisor is the same for travel as Yelp is for finding restaurants. Trip Advisor has loads of information!

Bookitcom – I love this service when I am unsure of where I want to travel to. Bookit.com gives you the ability to simply put in the dates you want to travel and the airport you are leaving from! Sometimes I have been unsure of where I want to go and Bookit.com always gives me itineraries for the best price out of my local airport and forces me to try new places to travel for a good price. This site is a must do for travelers on a budget that are unsure of where they want to visit!

Hotels.com – They sometimes have a promo code advertised on their page at the bottom which makes it really convenient to get a deal when booking here.

Bookingcom – When booking your hotel through this site, a lot of the rooms have a free cancellation policy which I think is great in case you are unable to go on your trip…You are still able to get your money back!

One last thing, I must add…before booking any of the sites above, make sure to search the website, RetailMeNot before booking to see if they have any promo codes available to use on their sites. To read more about Retail Me Not and to see other savings websites, go to my article here –> WEBSITES TO SAVE MONEY.
