Last weekend I had an opportunity to visit the Urban Grill and Wine Bar in Foothill Ranch and I had a fabulous experience! They are located at 27412 Portola Parkway in Foothill Ranch, California. Tucked away in a business plaza with a few other restaurants and of course a Starbucks, they aim to please and are definitely successful at this task!
I was excited to be invited to check out the cuisine and of course the wine! I am a huge wine person so the name of this restaurant alone definitely had me pretty excited! I arrived at the Urban Grill and Wine Bar on a Friday evening around 7:30pm and the place was packed! This is always a great sign. 🙂 The place was seriously bustling with all sorts of people having a fabulous time. The bar area seating where you can actually watch the kitchen cook was full to the brim and we were pleasantly seated at a half booth, half chair table in the center of it all which was absolutely perfect!
To start our meal, my husband and I decided to both order a cocktail, as we have heard their amazing “Bartenderella” (How cute is
that?) knows how to make a mean drink! I had been viewing some of their cocktails on instagram and had 2 cocktails in mind that I wanted to try and after the war in my head over which one to pick, Bartenderella told me her favorite…so the Blueberry Mule it was! My husband opted for a whiskey based cocktail and got the Grand Larceny. Cocktails are updated seasonally and my hubby’s cocktail is soon to leave the menu as it was a fall/winter option, but stay tuned for new bevies!
My blueberry mule had Tito’s handmade vodka, fresh blueberries, lime juice & ginger beer & my hubby’s Grand Larceny was blended with Larceny Kentucky straight bourbon, apple cider, large ice cube (he loved this), orange twist, and a cinnamon & sugar rim! They were both delish! I liked mine better, but I am not a big whiskey person so I guess I cannot be one to judge! Both drinks were blended nicely and hit the spot after a long day at work on Friday! These drinks were definitely a great way to start the weekend. 🙂
Next, we ordered the cheese plate, as I am obsessed with cheese plates and always looking to try new cheeses to pair with my wines! This cheese plate had a variety of cheeses that included a cheddar, a goat, a Port Reyes Blue and Midnight Moon (if you have not tried this cheese…it is a must…smooth & creamy!) Paired with the cheeses were dried figs, honey, and Marcona almonds.
To pair with this cheese plate, my hubby opted for a beer, which was a craft beer from an Anaheim Brewery, Bottle Logic Brewing Company and the beer was called Tattered Prince, which was a French Style Saison with 7.3% alcohol content. Saison Beers are awesome and have a slight citrusy flavor…They have become one of my favorites!
I wanted to select a wine to go with the cheeses and while I was unsure of what to choose due to several of the cheeses paring better with a white and several of them pairing better with a red, our helpful waitress, Bree told me about their awesome wine flights that they had a available! I did not see these on the menu and I think they will add them in the future, but please do inquire about it!
I was unsure of which wine to order because I noticed there were many names of wines I had never heard of…This was quite impressive as I am very well versed in wine and have wine weekly and have been wine tasting in a variety of different regions including Paso Robles, Santa Ynez Valley,
Napa, Sonoma, Temecula, Tuscany and more! Bree explained to me that they purchase small batch wines and I thought that was pretty awesome! She helped me select 4 different wines for my flight which inlcuded Ramey Chardonnay Sonoma Coast 2012, Kaiken ‘Ultra’ Malbec Mendoza Argentina 2012, Stack House Red Blend Sonoma County 2012, and the Dutcher Crossing PR Cabernet Alex Valley 2012. Each of these wines was splendid and I ended up ordering a glass of the Dutcher Crossing to go with my dinner!
For our dinner selections my husband opted for the pork chop as it came highly recommended from both the owner, Jaime Benson, Bartenderella & Bree! 🙂 The Pork Chop was prepared with candied ginger apples, Asian bbq sauce, and au gratin potatoes. This pork chop was cooked to order and was Sous Vide, so it kept all of the moisture in the meat and was a splendid explosion of flavors! I selected the 7 ounce Urban Skillet Steak which was
a filet mignon with wild mushrooms, peppercorn, cognac, a touch of cream & au gratin potatoes There is also an 11 ounce option for those with a bigger appetite. This steak was cooked perfectly. Some places struggle with getting a steak right, but I would highly recommend the steak at Urban because it was cooked perfectly & I was very excited to have my leftovers for lunch the next day! We both thoroughly loved our au gratin potatoes! They were made with just the right amount of butter, cheese, and cream to make you not want to put down your fork and continue to stuff your face!
To finish our meal, we ordered a delicious seasonal cobbler a la mode that was made with fresh berries from the season. Even though I was happily full from my meal, there is something about the excitement of dessert that allows me to still devour and finish it every time and my husband and I definitely licked our plate clean! I have heard the bread pudding is pretty amazing as well as the Crème Brule, so they are definitely something I am looking forward to trying next time! 🙂 They also have a daily happy hour that is worthwhile to check out in the future!
