A few years ago, I went to the grand opening of the Jimmy’s Famous American Tavern (aka JFAT) in Dana Point and it was a delicious place and just recently I was invited to check out the newest Jimmy’s Famous American Tavern in Brea that opened earlier this year in February. 🙂
The Brea location is in a convenient shopping center, Village at La Floresta which is relatively close to the freeway exit off of Imperial Highway and Valencia. Upon entering the restaurant, we instantly felt welcomed by the staff and the restaurant was decked out with holiday décor for the festive season. We were promptly seated at a booth in the dining room and greeted by our friendly waiter, Rob. Rob was so awesome and we thoroughly enjoyed his service…I just had to get a photo of him. As we mulled over the menu, Rob gave some of his favorite meal suggestions to us and we ended up selecting the brussels sprouts and the Buttermilk Fried Chicken per his recommendation! The menu at Jimmy’s is pretty extensive and we had never dined at the Brea location before. There was such a variety of selections we wanted to try. At the Dana Point grand opening we had enjoyed cocktails and tray passed appetizers, but it certainly was great to be able to see the variety that they offered and to select our favorites! 🙂 See my Dana Point JFAT experience here –> JFAT DANA POINT.
We decided to select four menu items and a dessert from the menu to share between the two of us and we literally fell in love with everything we devoured! To start our meal, I got the cucumber cooler cocktail which was prepared with Finlandia Vodka, St. Germain, fresh cucumber, and lime and my husband had the Modern Times Black House Stout beer. Both of these drinks were tasty. My cocktail was very refreshing and made me think of a summer day even though the temperature was only 60 degrees’ Fahrenheit outside. Modern Times has easily become one of my husband’s favorite brewers lately and his favorite beer every time is the stout! The Textbook Merlot from Napa Valley also pictured below was a great compliment to our fried chicken!
The first dish to arrive on our table was the Charred Brussels Sprouts that were a combination of sprouts, Applewood bacon, pine nuts, and maple syrup. My hubby has been quite fond of brussels sprouts for a while now and I have been slowly struggling to feel the same way. I must say these brussels sprouts were full of flavor and I loved the pine nuts added to the mix. I had never had pine nuts on brussels sprouts before and they were a really nice touch blended in with the maple syrup. This portion of Brussels Sprouts for only $9 a serving really blew us away!
Next, we had the White Truffle Mac N Cheese. I am always a sucker for mac n cheese and I love truffle everything! In comparison to other mac n cheese’s I have had, this was definitely one of my favorites. There was a lovely crusting over the top of this dish that added a little bit of crunchiness to the texture and the smell of truffles encapsulated the dining room when I arrived at this restaurant and I simply had to devour this dish! This mac is certainly high up on my list.
We also had the Pear, Black Fig Jam, Blue Cheese, Fontina, Prosciutto & Arugula. With such an interesting combination of ingredients, I was not sure of what to expect, but when this dish arrived on our table my mouth began to water. This flatbread was not some skimpy appetizer. I easily could have had this baby as my dinner! This dish was jam packed with ingredients and they applied them quite liberally. The flavor blend of the fig jam, pear and prosciutto rocked my world. This is a must order when you visit this restaurant. I was stoked that I was able to save some for breakfast the next day since we had a plentiful amount of food.
We selected one entrée to share from the Large Plates selection of the menu which came highly recommended by our waiter Rob. This dish was the Buttermilk Fried Chicken prepared with Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Thyme Gravy, and Green Beans for $19. We both loved this dish and it was quite a bit of bang for your buck! The chicken was nice and moist with a delicious crunchy breading that encompassed the meat.
Lastly, we ordered the dessert, Pumpkin and Pecan Streusel cake which was a seasonal item. This item came highly recommended by the manager and our waiter and even though we had leftovers of our food, we did a pretty good job demolishing this dessert! Rob also brought us a sample of an amazing Belgian Seasonal beer! It was the perfect amount for two and while I debated on getting the “bananageddon” I stopped myself…That dessert looks pretty amazing though…Keep an eye out for that one if you like banana and caramel!
We had such a great experience at JFAT Brea and I do hope to go back again to dine there soon! The service was fantastic and the food was over the top! I will definitely request the waiter, Rob again when we go back because he really helped to make our night a great one!
